SAVE MAA!!! – SIGN THE PETITION!!!
Well, this came as a surprise to everyone this morning, albeit not that much of a surprise here at MAA Times. On MAA 2 it lists its upcoming PVP tournament as the “Final Tournament”. Clearly this is a sign that MAA 2’s short run is coming to an early end. Why did this happen?
Obviously MAA 2 failed to draw in more players as Playdom previously hoped for. Why did MAA 2 follow the same path as MAA Tactics? Here are some reasons why MAA 2 failed to live up to the success that MAA 1 has endured.
UPDATE — MAA 2 IS NOT SHUTTING DOWN! – CLICK HERE
- They moved away from Facebook.
One of the reasons why MAA 1 was so succussful was because its tie with Facebook and its readily accessible huge population base. Moving to mobile may have opened more options in terms of programming and they no longer were restricted to the nightmares that Flash gave them. However, MAA 1 was practically born on Facebook. The fact that the Playdom version of the game died out should have been some indication.
2. Removing the Agent from the game was a mistake.
The simple idea with an agent with a huge of weapons at his disposal alongside two super powered heroes was a brilliant formula! It worked better than even Playdom themselves expected in 2012. Removing the Agent from the equation was a big mistake. Granted many players liked to play without the agent in many MAA 1 scenarios, but that was more a kin to “girls night out”. They didn’t want a divorce from the Agent!
3. They strayed too far away from the original game mechanics.
Why mess with such a good formula? Besides removing the agent, they also removed many other elements of MAA 1 which made it Marvel Avengers Alliance. The simple yet brilliant rock-paper-scissors class advantages were gone. Infiltrators no longer countered Tacticians. Scrappers no longer followed up. Tactician’s no longer got extra turns. Yet, the classes still remained, but its advantages over each other were less clear. Why even have classes at all at this point?
4. It was a lot more complicated that MAA 1 and harder to learn.
There was more of a steep learning curve in MAA 2. Many players simply didn’t have the patience nor time to learn a game that was so vastly different from its predecessor. Also there were just too many different factors that needed attention for leveling heroes. The grind was too long and hard for many.
5. Time is a valuable asset to players that Playdom fails to recognize.
Many of the players of MAA are hard working middle class adults with very little time in the day. For some MAA is the only game they play. For others it is the ONLY Hobby they do! So, to get them to try another game even if it is great and in the Marvel Universe, it simply may not be an option to them. That’s one of the reasons Marvel Avengers Alliance Tactics failed. It was a great game and in many ways closer to the original MAA 1 than MAA 2 was. Yet, still failed because who wanted to start over? Players were happy and doing just fine in the game they loved. The fact that MAA 2 took longer to both learn and master just compounded this problem. Many players tried MAA 2 but just left after a few weeks.
6. Failure to deliver new content on a regular basis.
This is a no brainer, and another reason why MAA 1 survived and thrived for 4 years straight. “Just when I thought I was out…THEY PULLED ME BACK IN!” players thought as they were barraged with so much content every month it would make Al Pacino’s head spin 300 times over! This wasn’t quite the same with MAA 2. Crickets could be heard on the helicarrier for weeks at a time. This and many other factors stated above simply failed to hook players in like MAA 1 did in 2012.
So what does this mean for MAA 1? Is MAA 1 going to have a similar fate? Many worry mongers think so after the ending of Chapter 12. However, we think not. On the contrary we believe that MAA 2’s demise can only spell GOOD NEWS for MAA 1. Now all the finance and resources will be directed and focused once again on the game we love. Expect to be blown away by Season 3!. A new golden age and renaissance is coming to MAA 1, and we at MAA Times can’t wait! 🙂

I really enjoyed Tactics
M:AA2 Lost me when basic grunt’s one shotted the heroes (difficult to beat is fine but some missions/SpOp’s where impossible) That along with random hero recruitment and a worse PvP (only good part was no DEF losses)
was PD/disney trying to move its players from maa1 to maa2 with the introduction of maa2?
was the envisioning getting rid of maa1? some of the things on the list above made me think that
A couple other reasons I didn’t care for MAA 2:
* Random hero/ability generation wasn’t entirely random and wasn’t at all helpful. Had all Captain America variations long before I got Hulk or any Guardians and I think I got the same BP ability five straight times for the 25 gold.
* Frequent crashes on my tablet. Of the six games on my tablet, only two, both Marvel, crash frequently.
leaving facebook was definitely their worst move for MAA2
Theres only one REAL reason MAA2 failed, and its name is justin woods.

Can anybody identify who this “Steve” is? MAA Times would like to talk to him.
MAA Tactics was awesome. If they could have tied the 2 games together in a significant way might have made a big difference.
Agree – Tactics was pretty and fun but for me it was the travel time of the airplane?!? Who has time to stare at the screen waiting for the plane to get to the fight
i’ve liked all of the M:AA games, but 1 is my favorite, i can enjoy it casually from my computer without problem. M:AA:T had good promise. i love the tactical battle style and overall mechanics. i hated the pvp elements that made pvp required when i myself loathe pvp, and the base being destroyed on login made enjoying the normal game sad/difficult. were it not for the horrible pvp style they had tactics had potential to become my favorite. 2 i wasnt able to enjoy due to not owning a mobile device capable of playing games and using bluestacks was an abbysmal task unto itself. so what little i did play, i would say, not being able to construct teams with heroes i wanted was the biggest let down. followed by arduous training methods making what you did have access to even worse. the premise although was great especially with the potential to have multiple universe versions of heroes to have access to. also, they shot themselves in the foot with no mutants.
The big thing? MAA1 has an awesome storyline, with groaner jokes (especially in some of the deploys), actual touching moments (the Nightcrawler/Mystique battle was amazing), and a sense of a mystery where you can’t wait to see what happens next.
That’s completely MIA in MAA2.
Now I’ wondering if Playdom shut down the MAA forums in favor of the MM2 forums. Tie to bring back the Ma1 forums.
Tactics also had some infamous lag issues, and the PvP where you raided the opponent’s base got boring after awhile As for MMA2, I never got around to playing it because of tie issues. Even i limit myself to two online games, and still play store bought games. But there is daily life, errands to run, people to see…MMA1 is easy, not too much time consuming and if you started like I have from the grand opening- that’s four years invested.
Besides…
MMA1 cannot shut down until we get Namor!
Even then it shouldn’t close!
They will be ending it on Sept 30 2016
maybe they can bring the one i liked from maa 2 no defensive losses in pvp just revamp the entire pvp mechanics in maa1 to include no def losses that would hopefully root out the cheaters in the game somewhat
Nope. Even MAA 1 doesn’t survive.. RIP.
They will the game in all platform on Sept. 30, 2016
“Attention:
Today we are announcing the shutdown of Marvel: Avengers Alliance and Marvel: Avengers Alliance 2 on all platforms, including the App Store®, Google Play™, Amazon Appstore, Windows Phone Store, and Facebook. Beginning today, we are no longer accepting new purchases or downloads, but the games will be available to play until September 30, 2016.
We greatly appreciate the passion and support of all our players. This was a difficult decision, but we plan to focus our efforts on new games for our fans and community. Thank you for playing.”
Looks like MAA’s fate is tied up with MAA2.
